NICE guidance in the UK helps health care professionals deliver the best possible care based on the best available evidence. In April 2013, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence will take on an expanded role to cover adults’ and childrens’ social care. Though it will still be known as NICE, the organization will change its name to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence.

This lunch seminar will give company executives the opportunity to learn more about the growing role of NICE and participate in a discussion with the organization’s current and future chairs. The session will feature a presentation followed by Q&A. Topics covered will include:

• how NICE evaluates evidence
• the impact of NICE in the adoption of innovative products across the NHS
• how NICE’s role will evolve in the future

There is no charge to attend, but registration is required and places are limited. Representatives from UK Trade & Investment (the commercial arm of the British government) will also be on hand to answer questions and discuss opportunities available to US companies in the UK.

Speakers:

Sir Michael Rawlins – Chair, NICE

Sir Michael Rawlins has been chairman of the National Institute of Health & Clinical Excellence (NICE) since its formation in 1999. He is also an Honorary Professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London, and Emeritus Professor at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. He was the Ruth and Lionel Jacobson Professor of Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne from 1973 to 2006. At the same time he held the position of consultant physician and consultant clinical pharmacologist to the Newcastle Hospitals NHS Trust. He was vice-chairman (1987-1992) and chairman (1993-1998) of the Committee on Safety of Medicines; and chairman of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (1998 - 2008). He is President Elect of the Royal Society of Medicine.

Prof. David Haslam CBE – Chair-Designate, NICE (assuming the role of Chair in April 2013)

David Haslam is Chair Designate of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, and will become Chair in April 2013. He is also National Clinical Adviser to the Care Quality Commission, immediate past-President of the British Medical Association, immediate past-President of the Royal College of General Practitioners, and visiting Professor in Primary Health Care at de Montfort University, Leicester. He was a GP in Ramsey, Cambridgeshire, for many years and is also chair of the NHS Evidence Advisory Committee, co-chair of the NHS Future Forum Information subgroup, a member of the NHS National Quality Board and chair of the NQB Quality Information Committee, a Fellow of the Royal College of GPs, a Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health, a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Educators, and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. David was Chairman of the RCGP from 2001 to 2004, and was a member of the NHS Modernisation Board, vice chairman of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, a member of the Postgraduate Medical Education Training Board, a member of NHS MEE, and co-chair of the MMC Programme Board from 2006-9. He has written 13 books, mainly on health topics for the lay public and translated into 13 languages, and well over a thousand articles for the medical and lay press. He was awarded the CBE in 2004 for services to Medicine and Health Care.
